The Cool Mom’s Guide To Fall Decor

Is there anything better than fall vibes? The gorgeous colors, a warm #PSL in your hand, pumpkin carving, apple orchards…we could go on and on!

Our favorite way to celebrate the change of seasons? Refreshing our homes with some gorgeous fall decor, of course!

Let’s face it, though, Mamas. Some of the fall decor out there leaves a little something to be desired. We want our homes to be cozy and beautiful but still feel elegant and curated. Let’s step it up a notch from the screen printed pillows with phrases like “Thankful” and “Gather”.

If you are looking to decorate for Fall but are feeling uninspired, we’ve got you covered. We’re sharing all of our Certified Cool Mom decor ideas that will keep you feeling in the Fall mood all autumn long.

Keep it Natural

It can be easy to pop into your local home goods store and get sucked in by the hundreds of options they have for fall decor. However, filling your house with plastic pumpkins and mass-produced art can quickly have your space feeling tacky and overwhelming.

When in doubt, we recommend gravitating toward natural decor items. Decorating with items such as real pumpkins and gourds can infuse your room with color and texture. They are much more eco-friendly than artificial versions.

Fall flowers can also be a great addition to any space. Sunflowers, daisies, black-eyed Susans, and Russian sage are gorgeous flowers that bloom well into autumn. Don’t forget about greenery! Things like garlands and wreaths can instantly elevate a room.

Finding natural decor is also a great way to get kids involved. Hand your kids a basket and have them search for pinecones and acorns at the local park. For an affordable table centerpiece, you can store them in glass jars like these

Set the Scent

When decorating a room, it’s easy to focus on the visual component. If you want to create an effective atmosphere, it’s essential not to neglect the other senses. We love the transformative power of scent to change the vibe of a room.

The easiest way to do this is through a good candle! We’re obsessed with this Harvest Spice candle in a gorgeous ceramic jar from Joanna Gaines’ Hearth and Hand line. Pumpkin scents, not your thing? Try this rich Cedarwood and Mandarin scented candle instead.

If you’re sensitive to artificial scents and perfumes, create your own potpourri. In a small saucepan, combine 5 cups of water with a few cinnamon sticks, cloves, and the peel of one orange. Allow it to simmer on low heat, and watch as your home becomes instantly cozy.

Think Outside The Pumpkin

We all know that pumpkins are practically synonymous with fall. However, filling your entire home with pumpkin decor may feel a little overwhelming.

If you’re looking to switch things up, we recommend thinking outside the box. Alternative seasonal produce can be a great source of inspiration. For example, we love this woven wall sculpture, designed to look like ears of corn (cue the Instagram Corn Kid song).

These felted acorn garlands would also be a perfect little detail to add to a fireplace or open wall.

Light The Way

We know you’ve heard it from us before on The Cool Mom Co.  about the importance of lighting when it comes to setting the tone of your home. Fall vibes are all about staying cozy and warm. Everyday lighting, like harsh overhead lamps, can take away from the relaxing feeling you’re aiming for.

Instead, reach for softer lighting options. If you want to get festive, we love these pumpkin lanterns with a boho rattan look.

For a more neutral choice, we think you simply can’t go wrong with a classic taper candle. Not only are they effortlessly elegant, but you can swap out the candle holders to create different moods. Personally, we are head over heels in love with this holder from Anthropologie. Talk about swoon-worthy!

Lean Into Texture

Fall decor is known for its vivid color palette of reds and oranges. However, autumn is also the perfect time to lean into textured fabrics and accent pillows. This is the season of cozy quilts and knit sweaters. You can bring these same elements into your everyday home decor!

We love scouring our local thrift shops for vintage quilts. These can add a fun point of interest to your bedding or can be used to stay warm during a fall bonfire.

Warm woolen throw blankets are an excellent way to entice your family to curl up in the living room for a Halloween movie night. Plaid and tartan blankets like these will last for years to come and instantly invoke feelings of fall.
