Not Just For-Mom Jeans: Denim Staples Your Wardrobe Needs

There is absolutely nothing as effortlessly cool and versatile as a good pair of jeans.

Denim was originally created to be used for sturdy workwear. It wasn’t until the 1970’s though that women started wearing jeans regularly. Nowadays, we all know we can’t live without our tried and true pair of jeans.

Jeans are the ultimate fashion staple. They are comfortable and functional to wear every day, but can also be dressed up for evening wear or work.

Finding your go-to pair of jeans, though? Not as easy as it sounds. You can buy denim at just about any store, but the fit and quality can vary wildly.

No need for any shopping stress, though, Mamas! We’ve tried a LOT of jeans in our day, and know exactly which styles you’ll wear. The phrase “Mom Jeans” will take on a whole different meaning, when the world sees you rocking these pieces!

Boyfriend Jean

It’s official! A relaxed fit of jean is the most popular choice on the market, these days. We can totally understand why. Between the effortless fit and nostalgic 90’s vibes, relaxed jeans are perfect to wear everyday.

Unlike other fits, relaxed jeans usually don’t fit in one category. You’ll hear phrases like “straight,” “girlfriend,” and “boyfriend” jeans from different brands. While all of these may have slight variations, the general consensus is that a relaxed jean will fit snugly around the waist, and loose around the calves and thighs.

Our idea of a perfect relaxed pair? These boyfriend jeans from Rag and Bone.

We love the light wash that is perfect for summertime. These jeans feature no stretch denim that will hold their shape.

If you are a high rise jean devotee, don’t run away screaming when you see that these are mid rise jeans. Mid rise jeans are often a more flattering fit if you have a shorter torso! These will offer the perfect amount of support, but won’t dig in uncomfortably to your stomach.

Raw Hem

Raw hem jeans are everywhere these days! We think they are the perfect summer denim staple. The raw hem gives an instant beachy vibe, and is a little less formal than more tailored jeans.

Raw hems are also a great hack for any petite Mamas out there. You can cut them to be the perfect length for you. No trip to the tailor needed!

This pair from Good American has an adorable slit that adds a subtle flair to the shape. Made with comfy, high stretch denim, they are available in a wide range of sizes for all bodies.

Flare Jeans

The summer of love may be over, but the trends are back in full force!

Flare jeans make an instant style statement. If we’re being honest, we also think that they are one of the most flattering styles out there. They give the illusion of a super snatched waist, while balancing out the rest of the body.

Free People has always been a go to for a boho chic closet, and they do not disappoint with these jeans! Available in a wide variety of colors, these jeans have a super high waist taht would look adorable with a crocheted crop top or flowy blouse. Pleat detailing on the waist adds interest.

With these jeans on you’ll be spreading peace and love wherever you go.

Distressed Denim

Look, we all have that resident joker in our life who loves to point out the rips in our jeans. “You paid money for a broken pair of pants?”

Yes. Yes, we did because they look cool!

Distressed denim comes in many different forms, but this pair from Anthropologie makes us feel like an artist working away in our studio.

If you want the distressed look, but aren’t necessarily down to show that much skin, these are the jeans for you! Special patches underneath the tears give you the distressed look, while also making these jeans a statement piece.

The Skinny Jean

Gen Z has declared that the skinny jean is dead. Then again, they are also trying to bring back low rise pants, so perhaps we should take our hard won wisdom and ignore them this time.

The fact is that a pair of skinny jeans are a valuable wardrobe staple. We believe all closets benefit from a wide variety of fits and styles!

Skinny jeans work great with tops that are a bit more flowy. If you live in a colder climate, skinny jeans are also a great choice, as they pair best with boots.

Madewell makes jeans that are favorites with denim lovers due to their quality build. Because skinny jeans work better in the colder months, we recommend going with a dark wash that will work well in the winter.

Wide Leg Jeans

If you’re not ready to take on the flare trend, yet, compromise by buying a pair of wide leg jeans.

Wide leg jeans have an artsy vibe. Because they are usually cropped, they are a fun choice if you are looking to show off a cute pair of heels.

We’d wear this pair from Pilcro with clogs and a white bodysuit.

White Jeans

They say no white pants after Labor day, but with jeans this cute we have to disagree.

White jeans are often forgotten about. We think that’s silly, because there is almost nothing more versatile!

They are a perfect pant to wear in the summer, but don’t discount them for your winter wardrobe. Paired with a chunky, cream colored knit, they create an elegant monochromatic look.

We love this pair from Levi’s, in their signature 501 fit.

The Sustainable Jean

If you are looking to invest in some eco-friendly denim, look no further than Outerknown. These jeans are made of 100% organic recycled cotton. As an added bonus, Outerknown’s jeans are guaranteed for life! Got a hole? Send them back for a repair and they will be returned as good as new.

Overalls

While not, strictly speaking, a pair of jeans, we couldn’t end this article without a shoutout to one of our favorite wardrobe pieces.

Overalls are a great option for busy Mamas. They are great for running around and playing with your littles. At the same time, they make your entire outfit look coordinated and stylish.

This pair from Nordstrom has a dark wash that is a great closet staple. The flexible denim will take you from Zoom meetings to soccer practice with ease. Once you go overall, you’ll never go back!
