What inspired you to write a book about food and healthy eating for children?

Over a decade ago I worked for Chef Jamie Oliver on a project called The Food Revolution. We worked with kids in underserved communities with health issues based upon what their diets. I worked elbow to elbow with many of these kids eating fruits and vegetables from the earth. I saw what an impact it made on them and their health. I knew then I would make it my life mission to help kids eat a little bit better and be healthier.

Can you tell us about your research process & preparation for writing “This is What I Eat”?

A lot of the research I did was working with kids in schools and in my personal life. Additionally I have spent most of my career at farms, farmers markets and in professional kitchens. In every space I have been in I learned something that helped me be a more well rounded eater and feeder of information and food.

What message do you hope children will take away from reading your book?

I hope this book will make kids more curious about what they are eating and the process of where it comes from. The book is for age 2-8, adults will love it too. As a result I hope that they get to try new things and make some decisions that will lead to a healthier life.

Can you share any fun facts or interesting tidbits about the foods featured in your book?

There are really cool factoid boxes sprinkled all over the book! Did you know that there are 7,500 different types of apples? The most produce consumed in the world is consumed in China? Tomatoes are the most eaten fruit!

How do you think parents and caregivers can encourage children to make healthy food choices?

Parents and caregivers can encourage healthy food choices by giving their kids the option. If you put food out your kid is going to eat it. It’s science! Parents/guardians are the ones in charge! If you’re kid doesn’t like it at first, it takes about 10-30 tries… keep putting it on their plate.

What was your favorite part about writing your book?

I loved using the art I created over the years to inspire design for my book. I have made art through my findings at the farmers markets over the year. I loved taking the colors, shapes, and textures and putting them into the book for kids to discover.

What was the most challenging aspect of creating “This is What I Eat”?

Patience! Writing a book is a long process with a team involved! There is lots of editing, writing, editing, going back and for with my editor, illustrator, publisher. I am very fortunate to have had an incredible team. My agent, editor, illustrator and publishing house were as in love with my book as I am. I am so grateful they believed in my colorful vison.

How did your own experiences with food and nutrition shape the content of your book?

I grew up a competitive swimmer. I intuitively knew what I needed to fuel my body with in order to swim fast. A coach once told me that I wouldn’t put regular gas in a corvette and it stuck with me. to go fast and thrive at your peak you must put the highest quality ingredients into your body. So I did my best!

Have you received any feedback from young readers or their families about how your book has impacted their eating habits or perspectives on food?

Kids and parents are LOVING this is what I eat!!!! I’ve had a lot of parents email me that their kid has been trying new fruits and veggies. Some go by color, some take their kid shopping with them now, and a ton are letting their kids cook with them. It has made my heart incredibly full!

Do you have any other children’s books in the works?

I do!!!!! But it needs to be sold first. I am truly so excited for it. Its going to be DELICIOUS!!!!

What advice would you give to aspiring children’s book authors and illustrators?

If you have a vision, do not stop til you get there. Build a positive team around you. Always be your own advocate in all cases, there is no one that has a clearer vision of your needs as you do.
