Our founder, Lizzy Mathis, hosted a pretty epic panel hosted by Harper’s BAZAAR on fashion, design and sustainability at The Jane Club in Los Angeles.
The panelists included June Diane Raphael, Co-Founder of The Jane Club; AllysonFanger, CostumeDesigner of Grace & Frankie; Olivia Fleming, Digital Features Director at Harper’s BAZAAR; and AlvinaPatel, VP of Brand Marketing at Farfetch.
Sustainability is currently a trending topic that many brands, influencers and consumers are talking about. Today, everyone wants to be seen as sustainable, but there is very little agreement in what that actually means. Sustainable can mean microfibers in plastic in our water to how often you wear a piece of clothing.
Did you know, more than 16 million tons of textile waste are generated each year in the United States alone and the amount has doubled over the last 20 years, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency?
Fashion is responsible for 500,000 tons of plastic microfibers entering our oceans every year but 50 percent of all clothing ends up in landfills within one year of being purchased. The idea of cost-per-wear and investing in clothing that will last, is increasingly becoming the topic of conversation.
Read on for our takeaways from the conversation.
The meaning of sustainability can range from person to person. For some, like Olivia Fleming from Harper’s BAZAAR, it means zero waste and minimal impact on our environment, the reduction of use of chemicals and child labor.
Some simple choices you can make in your day to day:
Swap clothes with your friends (or use sources like Rent The Runway)
Use hand me downs for kids
Shop at vintage and thrift stores (such as The Real Real and Poshmark)
Buy classic pieces you can wear over a long period of time (and maybe even hand down to your kids)
Consider other options than fast fashion and the cost per wear ratio
