Morning Routine

Overall if you’re looking for glowy skin, it’s all about exfoliation and hydration. I use some chemical exfoliants, and physical exfoliants.

For my morning routine, If I’ve done retinol or any actives the night before, I’m washing my face. If I’ve done no actives, I’m not washing my face because my skin tends to be more dry; you can strip your skin of its natural moisture if you over wash it.

If it’s a no face wash day, I will do a hydrating spray like rose water to basically rehydrate my skin. I think that’s a big tip that a lot of people overlook. Your skin has to be primed to suck in product, the same way that you’d put lotion on right after you shower while your skin is damp to drink in the moisture.

So first, I do a hydrating rose water spray, then I will go in usually with a serum, hydrating serum or a Vitamin C serum depending on how my skin feels, sometimes I’ll layer serums. Then I use sunscreen, that is the most critical, MUST HAVE step.

For people that are really concerned about having a white-cast after putting on sunscreen, chemical sunscreens are the way to go – dermatologists agree with me on this one. I think Supergoop makes incredible sunscreens, I love the Unseen Sunscreen that’s completely clear, and I love their Daily Moisturizer, that’s a great sunscreen too. Bolden, which is a black owned brand, makes an incredible SPF that I love. Black Girl Sunscreen is amazing, and Shiseido makes wonderful sunscreens as well. I feel like the technology behind their sunscreens is wonderful and they have a new one with Vitamin C in it that I love too.

After Sunscreen then I’ll do my eye cream, then makeup, and I’m good to go! I do eye cream in both the morning, and at night.

I’ve gotten into the habit of this routine, it’s kind of like working out; if you spend a lot of time working on your body, then your body is going to be better. So if you spend a lot of time on your skin, your skin is going to benefit.

Night Routine

I do a double cleanse at night, my first step is usually an oil or a balm cleanser. I feel like it’s just a really great way to take off makeup. Then I’ll go in with a foaming cleanser or a gel cleanser, and then I go in with my actives.

Right now I have some hyperpigmentation, so I’m using some hydroquinone that my dermatologist prescribed to spot treat. Then, I do a little bit of tretinoin, which is a retinol. The research behind retinol, there’s no debate – it makes your skin better and dermatologists will tell you that too. Prescription retinoids are the way to go, an added benefit is that your dermatologist can also walk through your retinol journey and see what works best for you. Being able to have those conversations with your doctor is super helpful. You have to be super diligent about sun protection while you’re using retinol, because it can make hyperpigmentation more visible due to higher skin sensitivity.
